Nakhat Ummi was not born, neither was it founded or created. It has existed all along, generations of flavour passed down through women. The simple acts of cooking with necessity and passion, from flavour.
Flavours of women who grew up in the heart of the home, the kitchen. The place where they watched wide-eyed with wonder and curiosity at what was being sliced, mixed, poured and stirred. A blend of rich, punchy and subtle aromas fill the house, stimulating the senses and watering the mouth.
These are women who cook from the heart, flavours built into the blood. The countless tasting teaspoons piled up in the sink from the repeated taste tests. Scrunched facial expressions, a telling sign that it’s just not right, so a sprinkle of this and maybe a dash of that. Then the perfect moment arrives, a satisfied ‘Mmmm’ as the tength teaspoon hits the sink.
These generations of women have absorbed and learnt, trial and error, to make each generational flavour their own. It is their art. Moving with the times yet still firmly rooted in authenticity. They have proudly fed their children, husband, families, friends, community. The same dishes, true home-cooked food, created again and again for decades.
I honour these women.
At Nakhat Ummi there is no measuring cup or weighing scale. There are many teaspoons, there is taste, there is flavour.
Nakhat Ummi offers a three course home cooked meal in the comfort of your home. Think ‘Supper Club’ vibes without the formality. All dishes are created with whole-food ingredients and generous appetites in mind. What separates Nakhat Ummi from the rest? Food is cooked with feeding loved ones in mind., that is the purpose.
The current menus on offer have been carefully curated so that each dish compliments each other. It is based on the concept that it is the same or similar food that would be served at a family meal.
There are currently two live menus. More menus and dishes will become available over time. If you have any specific requests or would like a curated menu please do get in touch. Nakhat Ummi has an open-kitchen-door policy. Conversations are welcome with open hands.
